Most Drivers Don't Know When They're Over The Drink-Drive Limit

New research has revealed that over half of British motorists don’t know when they’re over the legal drink-drive limit…

Unwittingly over the Limit

New research has revealed that Brits are pretty bad at determining when they’re over the legal drink-drive limit. 90 people were asked to consume beer, wine or wine and then to notify researches when they felt they’d gone over. Disturbingly, 53% of the participants believed they were (incorrectly) safe to drive when they stopped.

As a consequence, the team behind the study are calling on drivers to think carefully about the volume, and strength, of the alcohol they drink; especially over the Christmas period. This is all the more important given that police forces are now rolling out roadside breath tests, in order to clampdown on drink-driving. Those found over the limit can face fines, penalty points and even prosecution.

Not Good Judges

Dr Kai Hensel, who led the study from Cambridge University, told the Harm Reduction Journal that the study’s results call for better judgements. He said, “these findings show the importance of thinking carefully about getting behind the wheel. In countries with legal alcohol limits, it’s usually the driver who makes a judgement about how much they’ve drunk and how fit they are to drive”.

He continued, “but as we’ve shown, we are not always good at making this judgement. As many as one in two people in our study underestimated how drunk they were – and this can have devastating consequences”. Dr Hensel also said that raising the alcohol limit could have “serious consequences”.
