According to Zap Map, a website that tracks charging infrastructure in the UK, a quarter of EV drivers in the UK are also using an ICE vehicle. The discovery was made via its annual EV Charging Survey. Nevertheless, amongst those EV drivers using an ICE model, most journeys are still made in an electric vehicle.
Electric vehicles are most often used for local trips, such as those to shops, restaurants and schools. These journeys are made by ‘dual’ drivers 85% of the time. This isn’t to suggest, however, that EVs aren’t used for longer journeys as well. Some 71% of the dual drivers use an electric model whilst commuting. Even when journeys are longer than 100 miles, 67% are sticking with their EVs. A majority of them (55%) are using their EVs for holidays based in the UK.
Melanie Shufflebotham, COO & co-founder of Zap-Map, believes that the research demonstrates that EVs are versatile and reliable. She said, “our survey has shown for several years now that once you go electric, you don’t go back. This year we’ve gone further to show that drivers who haven’t quite let their conventional car go yet still choose to drive their electric. Even for those long cross-country journeys where a charge stop is likely to be necessary.
She added, “it’s an endorsement for EVs that even when the option is open to take the fossil fuel car, drivers are very happy to stick with electric.”
